Suggested Supplements

I want to stay healthy. What supplements do you recommend?

What a great question, and one that is hard to figure out on your own without a PhD in nutrition, or a medical education. It’s complicated and it seems the media is promoting new, conflicting information daily. I don’t believe supplements have to be so complex.

I do believe augmenting your diet with supplements is an intelligent choice.
After over 20 years of researching various products, and with an eye towards simplicity, the following recommendations are what I feel most people need on a regular basis. I follow my own advice (on this one).

This regimen is designed to heal/reverse our body’s trend toward degeneration. All the big ‘scary’ diseases fall under this category—heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases, arthritis… And while, these supplements will undoubtedly work to cure some people’s symptoms, additional supplementation may be necessary to treat specific illnesses. I advise taking these supplements as a preventative measure to best maintain your health for the long run.

I recommend three basic supplements for everyone, and the addition of high-quality calcium for peri-post menopausal women.

Pop-A-Greens and Purples
These pesticide-free whole food supplements are made from 45 nutritionally dense fruits and vegetables, high quality digestive enzymes and a healthy mixture of friendly bacteria (and their food) to improve digestive function.

The Pops also have plenty of high quality antioxidants and many extra ingredients that help improve eye health, encourage breast health in women and slow down the body’s aging process. The Pops provide a three-pronged approach that works in synergy to keep your whole body functioning well. They offer comprehensive prevention in an affordable form.

You can buy them from me at the office ($45 a box, for a one month supply.) Or if you wish to save money you can buy them online at http://uptownav.com/orders/.  It may ask you for a Representative ID, if it does you can just enter my name Steve Hall or my wife's name, Patti Pitcher. Either will work. If you have any questions, you can email my wife, Patti at Pattipitch@gmail.com and she'll happily help you figure things out. The cheapest way of all to receive the Pops is to get on subscription -- which means you order 3 or 4 boxes every four months on a regular basis. The price is then $37 a box with no shipping. It is as easy as pie to get on and off subscription. You can do subscribe online, or contact Patti. Anytime you wish to cancel, all it takes is an email to Patti. I suggest just getting on a subscription as it just makes being committed to your health one step easier. And in this day and age, easy is good.

Omega Three Oils
Those old fashioned mothers knew what they were doing when they lined their kids up for a dose of cod liver oil. It is the front line nutritional treatment for ADD/ADHD. High quality Omega Three Oils also reduce your chance of heart disease and stroke, and they work to decrease inflammation in your body, which helps diminish joint pain. They also help prevent cancer and can improve many irritating skin conditions.

There are many good Omega Three products available at quality natural food stores. However, the one I have found to be most effective personally and in my practice is not available in most stores. For your convenience, I carry it in the office. It’s called Essential Fish Oil by Pharmax and is $22 a bottle. Each bottle lasts a little over a month. If you are interested you can always call me and we can arrange for you to pick up a bottle at the office.

Noni Juice

When I read the research that I’m about to tell you about, I resolved, God willing, to take Noni juice for the rest of my life.

But before I do, if you want to just order without all the information, here is the link. http://www.tni.com/SteveHallMD

Now here's the scoop:

Experts believe that up to 95% of all cancers get their start by some interaction between an environmental pollutant and the chromosomes of a cell. In this interaction, the chromosome is altered, some genes are changed, and the cell is transformed from a normal cell into a cancer cell. Our exposure to environmental carcinogens is increasing every year. You can run, but you can’t hide...at least not on this planet. So what to do?

Dr. Wang, MD, at the University of Chicago, found that Noni actually helps prevent the chromosomal damage that turns a normal cell into a cancer cell in the first place.

She used an animal model in which a known standard carcinogen is given to the animal, and then different tissues are evaluated to see the extent of the chromosomal damage. The carcinogen causes little bumps, called “adducts,” to form on the chromosomes, which can be seen under the microscope and counted. This assay for carcinogenicity is well standardized in research and is also quantitative. That means it can predict just how carcinogenic something is. By giving a substance thought to prevent cancer, followed by a standard dose of carcinogen, one can look to see how many adducts are prevented from forming, giving a reliable estimate for how protective that substance could be expected to be. This is what Dr. Wang did with Noni.

She took two groups of mice. One drank only water with their normal feedings; the other, water with 10% Noni juice added. Compared to the water group, the group given the Noni showed a 90% reduction of adduct formation in the kidneys, 50% reduction in the lungs, 60% reduction in the heart and a 70% reduction in the liver. A similar study in rats showed an 80% reduction in the kidney, 41% reduction in the lungs, 26% reduction in the heart and a 42% reduction in the liver

To put these findings into perspective, up until this Noni data was available, the best-known antioxidants could only show a 20% reduction in adduct formation. Even at this fairly low rate of adduct prevention, epidemiological studies prove a cancer-preventative benefit to these antioxidants. Imagine if you doubled or tripled their preventative power. That is what I believe Noni will be shown to do.

If a person started taking Noni early enough in his or her life, before he or she formed any hidden tumors (Hint—start giving it to your kids), that person might cut his or her chances for developing cancer by more than 50%. I predict that Noni will soon prove to be an incredible aid in the prevention of cancer, even while the world grows more toxic.

Noni is available in a case of four one-liter bottles. At the usual dose of one ounce per day, a bottle lasts a month. You can order online at http://www.tni.com/SteveHallMD

When the screen comes up look for the bottle of Noni and click on the buy now button. It will walk you through the process. You can either buy at retail price or, if, like me, you plan on taking Noni for the long haul, you can join the Rewards Program and buy at the wholesale rate. The website explains how.

Calcium
The main issue with calcium is bioavailability, or how much of it gets into your bloodstream.

Calcium is very reactive and binds with many other nutrients. The most commonly used form of calcium is calcium carbonate. This is usually derived from oyster shells or coral. If either of these dissolved in water very well, they wouldn’t have done the oysters or coral very much good. Calcium carbonate is only about 10-20% absorbed, and only that much if you have good stomach acid. The rest of the calcium stays in the intestines and either passes through unchanged, or, worse, binds with other nutrients to prevent their absorption.

There are three other forms of calcium that are up to 90% absorbed and they are the citrate, malate and amino-acid chelated forms. These are more expensive so are usually only used by the good quality manufacturers. Read labels carefully for some manufacturers know that many people now know to watch out for the carbonate so they blare “Calcium Citrate” on the front of the bottle but list calcium carbonate in the ingredients and don’t specify the percentages.

Dosages of 1200 to 1500 mg/day are for the tablets with 10% absorption rates. If you get a high quality calcium, 200-300 mg/day are usually enough. Calcium frequently comes combined with magnesium. They are synergistic. Avoid magnesium oxide, which is magnesium rust and also does not dissolve well in water. Again, the best forms of magnesium are the citrate, malate and amino-acid chelated forms. Good supplements will have a calcium:magnesium ratio of 2:1 or 1:1.
