Compounding Pharmacies

Years ago, before drug companies standardized and patented drug formulas, doctors wrote prescriptions and patients brought them to a pharmacist. The pharmacist then compounded the medication in house.

The effectiveness of a prescription was dependent on both the doctor’s ability to diagnose and prescribe, and the pharmacist’s skill at formulating the medicine. And while, many pharmacists’ jobs have changed as drug companies’ standardized versions of drugs have become common, there is still an important place for compounding pharmacists.

Today’s compounding pharmacists allow your doctor to tailor your prescriptions to meet your body’s individual needs. This way, you are not limited to commercially available strengths, dosages and forms. Compounding medicines allows patients and practitioners to work together to fine tune treatments for optimal health.

Compounding allows patients access to a wider variety of therapies than conventional pharmacies. These therapies are often ones that drug companies don’t make available and must be compounded by pharmacists, such as bio-identical hormones, or nasal B-12. Many natural treatments are also only available through compounding. We are lucky to have many compounding pharmacies in Washington. Here is a partial list of local compounding pharmacies.
